“My apologies for being late.” I extended my hand and the man ignored it, looking really pissed. He had a right to be; my vocal coach wouldn’t let me go on time and I could hardly explain my appointment. I was twenty minutes late and had no way to reach him.

Instead of taking my hand, Edward Gobbins slowly rose from the plastic chair outside my dorm room and adjusted the gray striped tie on his button-down white shirt under a blue pinstriped suit. I suspected he’d gotten lots of looks on campus and people wondering why he was sitting in front of my room. I’d have to come up with something. I continued to hold out my hand. “I really am sorry.” He took it and it was a soft shake but he was a diplomat and maybe that’s how they did it. He was middle-aged with a funny mustache that covered his upper lip and cascaded over his mouth. It seemed so in contrast to his suit that maybe it was his unique form of diplomatic rebellion.

Once inside my room, I pulled a stack of books off Renoir’s chair and offered it to him. He seemed to be making a judgment whether he would be better off standing. The chair was vintage, a few rips and stains. “It’s dry so I think you’re safe to sit.”

He said nothing but sat, holding a leather briefcase in his lap.

“My singing coach—”

He held up his palm. “Let’s talk about Prince Abkar, young Prince Ali and the Saudi political establishment.”

For the next hour, I listened and asked questions, glad to get this kind of detail. My meeting with the princely duo was already scheduled and I probably needed to let Zachary know but I really couldn’t reveal the politics. Gobbins had sworn me to secrecy. This was a different kind of assignment and it intrigued me, a rare opportunity to study political science on an international stage, not to mention making a whole lot of money.
